Wild Alaska Pollock Industry to Release Results of Second Life Cycle Assessment

The results of the Wild Alaska Pollock industry’s second Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which measures the industry’s environmental impact across several key indicators, will soon be available, the Association of Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP) announced today. Researchers from Dalhousie University will present the results of this important study, which analyzed several key impact categories such as global warming potential, energy use, use of land and water resources, and waste outputs, at the upcoming Wild Alaska Pollock Annual Meeting on September 18.

“Our consumer research continues to show that sustainable protein continues to elevate in importance for food purchasing decisions,” said Craig Morris, GAPP Chief Executive Officer. “As we continue to work to protect the reputation of our fish and fishery, research like this is absolutely critical.”

The industry completed its first LCA in 2021, the results of which showed that Wild Alaska Pollock is one of the most climate-friendly proteins on the planet. A Wild Alaska Pollock fillet is 3.77 kg CO2-eq per kg of protein, significantly lower than comparative statistics reported for other protein sources including chicken, beef, pork and most plant-based protein options.

“The results of our industry’s first comprehensive LCA were staggering, and we fully anticipate that the results of the second study will show even better results especially with the industry’s investment in new technologies, new vessels and its commitment to continuously improved management techniques,” said Morris. “I can’t wait to hear the exciting new results at our Annual Meeting in September.”

The W Hotel in downtown Seattle will play host to the annual meeting for the second consecutive year. The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m., with an evening networking reception. Registration is available here for those wishing to attend the Wild Alaska Pollock Annual Meeting. GAPP's annual meeting is exclusively for those connected to the Wild Alaska Pollock industry, and registration is subject to GAPP approval.

GAPP would like to thank its generous sponsors for this year’s event: USI Insurance Services (Title); Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, Aquamar, Global Seas, and Port of Seattle (Gold); Glacier Fish Company, Marine Stewardship Council, and NORPEL (Silver); APICDA, Industrial Resources, Inc., Islandsbanki, and Restaurant Depot (Bronze); and Angulas Aguinaga and Blueprint Alaska Advocacy & Strategy (Supporting).
