GAPP Seeks Proposals for Market Assessment Research in Brazil, Colombia

In order to continue to grow demand for Alaska Pollock in key export markets, further research is needed to understand opportunities and challenges, the Association of Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers (GAPP) announced today. To meet this need, GAPP is seeking proposals from market research companies in the region to perform market assessments for Wild Alaska Pollock products in Brazil and Colombia.

“Working with our members, GAPP has identified several constraints facing the U.S. Alaska Pollock industry in the Brazilian and Colombian markets, including the shape and dimensions of Wild Alaska Pollock products cut from fillet blocks,” said Craig Morris, GAPP Chief Executive Officer. “We plan to overcome these constraints by first deeply understanding these challenges and then strategically working to overcome them and demonstrate the superiority of U.S.-caught Alaska Pollock over other whitefish alternatives.”

The market assessments research will work to provide to GAPP members critical information about the size of the current whitefish block/fillet portion in Brazil and Colombia from a consumption standpoint, the competitive landscape and opportunity for Wild Alaska Pollock and the perceived and real barriers to consumption. Research will also answer key questions about available further processing facilities in Brazil and Colombia as well as opportunities for meaningful marketing in both countries to drive demand.

“Our Board has directed us to continue to smartly and strategically investigate long-term opportunities for Wild Alaska Pollock in foreign markets and bring that intelligence back to the membership,” said Morris. “This research is another step in understanding how we can bolster two burgeoning Alaska Pollock markets—Brazil and Colombia—and create new opportunities for our fish through informed marketing and decisive market development.”

This research will be funded, in part, by USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Emerging Markets Program (EMP) grants. Detailed information on the proposal specifications can be found here. Proposals should be submitted to Ron Rogness at [email protected] no later than Friday, January 30, 2026.
