Because the Alaska pollock fishery is recognized around the globe for responsible fishery management, Genuine Alaska Pollock® is a great choice for consumers and chefs who prefer to choose sustainable seafood products. In 2005, after more than four years of extensive evaluation, the Alaska pollock fishery was certified as sustainable to the standards set by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for a well-managed sustainable fishery. This international organization, co-founded by the World Wildlife Fund, uses independent third-party certifiers to evaluate fisheries according to international standards of sustainability. Certified Alaska pollock products are eligible to carry the MSC eco-label. The Alaska pollock fishery is currently undergoing recertification in the MSC program and expects the certification to be renewed in 2010.

In addition, the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions, a group of 15 environmental groups concerned about seafood sustainability, has recognized the MSC program as credible and fully consistent with international guidelines from Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labelling Alliance (ISEAL). This group, which includes organizations such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, National Resources Defense Council, Blue Ocean Institute, the New England Aquarium and World Wildlife Fund – US, among others, encourages businesses to purchase MSC-certified products as part of their sustainable seafood policies.
